The Historic First March of Selma to Montgomery

The Selma to Montgomery March occurred on three different days along the road from Selma, Alabama, to the state capital of Montgomery. Its goal was to express the desire of African-American citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote.

By that, the first march happened in March 1965. The journey was tough as the marchers faced various violent attacks from law enforcement officers. The people were attacked with clubs and gas, leaving many protesters injured. That unfortunate moment was named “Bloody Sunday.” After much perseverance and determination, the Voting Rights Act was approved as a law in August 1965.
