Mary Rand (Born In 1940) – 1964 Summer Olympic Record
Mary Rand broke the world record for the long jump in 1964 and forever etched her name in the history books. With her accomplishment, she became the first British female athlete to win an Olympic gold medal in track and field, her specialization.
Rand has retired since 1968, but till today no other female Great Briton has been able to accomplish her feat: win three medals in one Olympic Games. She’s since kept a low profile, and although she’s rarely seen in the public or media, she’s occasionally remembered in a special way, like when she was awarded a Freedom of the City honor by the Wells parish in 2012.
